How to spot a safe video downloader, and a scam one

Updated 14 October 2026.

Most free video downloader sites are paid for by ads, and some of those ads are built to trick you. Ads on a free site are normal. These seven signs are not. Any one of them is enough reason to close the tab.

Seven signs a downloader is unsafe

  1. Several download buttons, and only one is real. The oldest trick on these sites. Big green buttons that say Download, Start or Continue are ads. The real one is usually smaller and sits right next to the video you asked for. If you cannot tell which button is real, leave.
  2. A new tab opens when you click anywhere. That is a pop-under or a redirect ad. It often leads to fake prize pages, fake virus warnings or app stores. A safe site opens a new tab only when you click a link that says where it goes.
  3. Your browser asks to show notifications. "Click Allow to continue" or "Allow to verify you are not a robot" is a trap. Allowing it lets the site send ads to your phone or computer for months, even after you close it. A downloader never needs this. If you already allowed one, remove it in your browser's site settings under Notifications.
  4. It asks you to install something. An APK file, a browser extension, a "video player" or a "codec" to download a video is the moment real malware gets in. A web downloader works in the page. Installing a site as a web app from your browser's own menu is different: it adds no new code and can be removed like a bookmark.
  5. It asks you to log in to TikTok, Instagram or Facebook. Public videos never need your password. A site that asks for it can take over your account. Private videos are private for a reason.
  6. The file is not a video. A video file ends in .mp4, .webm or .mov, audio in .mp3 or .m4a, a GIF in .gif. If you get an .exe, .apk, .dmg, .zip or .bat, do not open it. Delete it.
  7. Scary messages. "Your phone has 3 viruses", "Your battery is damaged", a countdown that demands you act now. These are ads pretending to be warnings. A website cannot scan your phone.

How DropVid does it

We made DropVid, so judge us by the same list. There is one download button, with the size on it, and no ad near it. Ads are labelled, and most load in a separate, locked frame that cannot see the page; after a download has finished, one more ad format runs on the page itself (the privacy page says which). People with a DropVid key see none. We never ask for notifications, never ask you to log in anywhere, and never ask you to install anything except, if you want it, the web app from your browser's own menu. Files are deleted from our server two minutes after you save them. The status page shows which sites work right now, and the privacy page says exactly what we keep.
