Make a video vertical

Crop a wide video to 9:16 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok. It keeps the middle of the picture and runs on your device.

Open a file

Pick a video or audio file, or drop one here. It stays on your device.

Or download a video first, then choose Make a GIF, clip or transcript.

How it works

  1. Open a file

    Open a wide video.

  2. Choose

Choose the part you want, if not all of it.

  3. Save

Tap Make vertical video, then save the MP4.

How the crop works

The editor keeps the centre of the picture and cuts the sides, so a 16:9 video becomes a 9:16 one at 720 pixels wide. That is the size Reels, Shorts and TikTok show on a phone.

It works best when the subject is in the middle: a person talking, a product on a table, one player on a court. If the action moves from side to side, trim to the part where it stays near the centre.

Upload limits on each app

Instagram Reels take up to 3 minutes for most accounts. YouTube Shorts take up to 3 minutes. TikTok takes much longer videos, but short ones do better. Trim before you crop and the file will be smaller and quicker to make.

Only post what you have the right to

Reposting someone else's video can break the platform's rules and their copyright. Use this for your own videos, or ones you have permission to share.

Questions

Is the sound kept?
Yes. The audio stays in the new MP4.
How long does it take?
Re-encoding video in a browser is slower than in an app. Expect roughly the length of the clip on a recent phone, longer on an older one.
Can I move the crop to the left or right?
Not yet. It always keeps the centre.
