Video to text

Turn the speech in a video or audio file into text and subtitles. It listens on your device, so nothing is uploaded.

Open a file

Pick a video or audio file, or drop one here. It stays on your device.

Or download a video first, then choose Make a GIF, clip or transcript.

How it works

  1. Open a file

Open a video or audio file.

  2. Choose

Tap Make transcript. The first time, the speech model downloads once.

  3. Save

Copy the text, or save it as an SRT subtitle file.

What you get

Two things: the plain text, ready to copy into notes or a document, and an SRT file with a timestamp for each line. SRT works in YouTube, VLC, most video editors and the subtitle tool on this site.

How accurate it is

It uses Whisper, an open speech model, in its English version. Clear speech with little background noise comes out close to word for word. Music, people talking over each other and strong accents bring more mistakes, so read it through before you publish it.

It understands English only for now. Other languages come out as rough English or nonsense.

Speed and privacy

The model is about 80 MB and downloads once; your browser keeps it after that. On a phone, transcribing takes roughly as long as the audio itself. On a laptop it is usually faster.

Because the model runs on your device, your recording is never sent anywhere. That matters for interviews, meetings and anything personal.

Questions

Is it free?
Yes. The editor does not use DropVid credits.
Can I transcribe a YouTube or TikTok video?
Save it with DropVid first (Audio only is enough), then open the file here.
Does it add punctuation?
Yes, Whisper writes sentences with punctuation and capital letters.
How long a file can it handle?
Files up to 400 MB. Very long recordings work, but on a phone they take a while; keep the screen on.
